In November 1939, the T.S.S. Markland was the first freighter to dock at the Robinson Terminal pier with 1,000 tons of newsprint. With World War II already started in Europe, changes were being seen and felt on this side of the Atlantic even though the United States itself was not at war. The "Markland" on her semi-annual drydock had a 4" gun mounted on her stern and she was fitted with other wartime gear.

Some ships that make their Port of Call to Alexandria are of the "conventional" type whereby onboard cranes lift cargo from the ship's cargo hole and placed on the Terminal's loading dock.

In 1997, the 274 foot research vessel "Atlantis" made Alexandria one of their first Ports on its' maiden voyage. It is operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) for the U.S. academic ocean research community.

Tall ships frequently visit our Port for shore leave or for celebrations of National and local events. Each year tall ships and naval ships come to Alexandria for the Red Cross Waterfront Festival.
